Abstract

PROBLEM: Mood problems, especially depression, can occur at various stages of life, thus encompassing the elderly population. OBJECTIVE: the diagnosis and degree of depression were determined through the geriatric Yesavage scale, and the incidence of psychosocial relationships, psychological programs and emotional stability. METHOD: descriptive cross-sectional study. The sample consisted of 80 older adults. RESULTS: the sociodemographic characteristic of the elderly attended in the Oasis del Eden Asylum, show a higher incidence of depressive disorder in the male sex, with 19% of the total population. The final data shows that 66% of older adults are within the stable mood range, 29% show mild to moderate type depression, and only 5% severe depression. CONCLUSION: the present study determined that there is a correlation between the mood of the patients and psychosocial factors such as family interaction, and that, the greater the participation in psychological support programs, the lower the possibility of suffering from depression. The final data showed that 66% of older adults are within the stable mood range, 29% show mild to moderate type depression, and only 5% severe depression.
