Characterization of disability and special needs in the educational center "Nuevo Día"

Abstract

PROBLEM: types of special educational needs associated or not with disability, in students of a special school. OBJECTIVE: to characterize the types of disability and Special Educational Needs that are attended in the Educational Center "New Day", Zacapa. METHOD: the universe consisted of 33 students enrolled in the special educational center "New Day" aged from 6 years onwards, from the public sector at the pre-primary and primary levels of the municipality and department of Zacapa. RESULTS: the most prevalent age group was 9 to 14 years old 71.9% (N=23), the predominant gender was male with 84.4% (N=27), the urban geographic area 100% (N=32), origin Zacapa 100% (N=32), the outstanding grade of schooling was 4th grade with 28.1% (N=9), students with disabilities present neurodevelopmental disorders 90.6% (N=29), population with special educational needs is classified in learning disorders with 43.75% (N=14), in relation to the multidisciplinary team 66.67% (N=2) are teacher´s. CONCLUSION: the "New Day" Educational Center does not have a multidisciplinary team for the care of students with special educational needs partners or not to disability.

Graduate in Pedagogy with a focus on Educational Administration and Evaluation, High School Teacher with Specialization in Mathematics and Physics at the Rafael Landívar University, Teacher of the Human and Professional Development course and scientific and humanistic areas at the Mariano Gálvez University. Master's student in Neuroscience with emphasis on Neurocognition.
