Abstract

PROBLEM: emotional loneliness, a significant phenomenon affecting many individuals throughout their lives, becomes more pronounced in older adults due to changes such as retirement, loss of loved ones, decreased mobility, and health issues. These shifts intensify solitude and isolation, impacting self-esteem. OBJECTIVE: to analyze the perception of emotional loneliness and its impact on self-esteem in older adults through tests measuring loneliness perception and self-esteem levels. METHOD: the sample comprised 25 Guatemalans aged 60 to 80, both institutionalized and non-institutionalized, with consideration given to those aware of their emotions and cognitive functions. RESULTS: predominantly normal self-esteem and diverse emotional loneliness perceptions were revealed. Data suggest that a healthy self-esteem is nurtured within familial and communal environments. CONCLUSION: this study discloses that while 32% of older adults experienced some degree of absolute loneliness, 12% of participants feel accompanied, linked to losses and abandonment by family or society. The significance of comprehending and addressing psychosocial factors influencing self-esteem and loneliness across different life stages is underscored, aiming to enhance the quality of life for older adults.
