Thanatological intervention in palliative care

Abstract

PROBLEM: patients with terminal illnesses are increasing over the years, so it is important to provide multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary care, because they need comprehensive care, covering emotional, psychological, physical and psychosocial aspects. AIM: to establish the thanatological intervention in palliative care carried out by health professionals. METHOD: a cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out with 142 patients treated in the Geriatric Palliative Care Program “CUIDARE”. RESULTS: it was shown that patients between 60 and 70 years of age predominate in obtaining palliative care, being the male gender most affected. Likewise, the thanatology intervention that predominated in the diagnoses of neurodegenerative diseases (28.17%), Cardiac (24.35%), pulmonary (22.54%). The time range showed that 33.80% have been treated for more than 48 months. Additionally, the severity level, 31.69%, is at the highest level. Patients receive 100% palliative care during the intervention. CONCLUSION: the sociodemographic characteristics predominate the ages between 60 and 70 years, and the masculine gender. In thanatological intervention, patients are diagnosed with progressive diseases, receiving special attention in palliative care.
