Abstract

PROBLEM: in Guatemala, there is a growing interest among hearing people in learning sign language as a way of establishing communication with deaf people and due to the approval of the sign language law. The interest arises then to know the factors that influence this learning. OBJECTIVE: to identify the factors that intervene in the learning of Sign Language in Guatemala, in hearing people. METHOD: it was an exploratory study with a mixed methodology and a sample of 144 people. RESULTS: the predominant profile is that the majority of the sample is female 88.19% and the predominant age range was between 21 and 30 years old with 35.42%. The factors that intervene in the learning of sign language in hearing people were analyzed: personal, family, environmental / inclusive and economic. CONCLUSION: Among the personal factors is the motivation to communicate with deaf people. Among the family factors, the family is essential since it stimulates the students and provides the appropriate environment to learn sign language. As for the environmental / inclusive factor, social networks are crucial to obtain information, strengthen the level of empathy and awareness towards people with hearing impairment. Regarding the economic factor, it should be noted that learning sign language is not expensive, and this is an incentive for the increased interest in studying it in recent years.
