Abstract

PROBLEM: deepen the investigation of the relationship between social media and the mental health of teenager´s in urban groups, in the eastern region of the country. OBJECTIVE: the objective of the research was to evaluate the use of social media and their effect on the teenager´s mental health in the urban area of ​​the municipalities of Esquipulas and Quezaltepeque, department of Chiquimula, Guatemala. METHOD: a descriptive study of mixed methodology with qualitative predominance was carried out in 80 teenagers about the use of social media and their effect on mental health. RESULTS: it was found that teenagers with a frequency of use of more than 2 hours a day of social media, reflected a greater presence of interpersonal problems, low self-esteem and well-being, anxiety and depression, identifying that the greatest use of social media is found in individuals very young, with greater predisposition in the female sex. CONCLUSION: it is concluded through the findings that most teenagers spend more than 2 hours connected to social media, so there is a challenge in Guatemala to implement standards or policies at the educational level that guide prevention on the proper management of social media in teenagers and avoid, in some level, the possible development of psychological disorders.

She is a Clinical Psychologist in the academic degree of Bachelor's degree, student of the last semester of the Master's in Neurosciences with emphasis in Neurocognition, University of San Carlos de Guatemala, dedicated to conducting studies on neurocognition, neuroeducation and neuropsychology.
