AIMS: To assess whether peer-reviewed scholarly journals recently created in Mexico and Guatemala comply with international standards. METHOD: This study employed a quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional research design. It was gathered a convenience sample that consisted of 20 electronic and peer-reviewed scholarly journals from Mexico and 10 from Guatemala that obtained their ISSN in 2021. RESULTS: It was found high scores on international standards such as the minimum required information on the journal’s website, editorial team, and articles’ metadata. However, there were moderate scores on minimum required information on articles, policy and journal’s guidelines, and privacy protection policy. Requirements to authors concerning the conduction of the study and journal’s metrics were among the standards with low scores. CONCLUSION: I concluded that peer-reviewed scholarly journals recently created comply with few international standards. I recommend that publishers consult experts to comply with all of them as soon as possible.
