Frequent neuropsychological syndromes in diagnosis of brain tumor with possible neurosurgical intervention

Abstract

PROBLEM: ¿what is the neuropsychological pictura of patients with a brain tumor that needs neurosurgical intervention? OBJECTIVE: to identify the neuropsychological syndromes in brain tumor diagnosis with neurosurgical intervention referred to the Integral Neuropsychological Clinic in Guatemala. METHOD: a cross-sectional retrospective study was carried out. The prevalence of the main neuropsychological syndromes in patients with a diagnosis of brain tumor and possible neurosurgical intervention in older adults from 30 years was determined, being the cases and patients from national and from the interior hospitals: from clinics and private hospitals. RESULTS: within the symptomatology that predominated in both genders, it was headache in 98%, followed by nausea with 85%, vision alteration with 76%, seizures with 58%, and hemiparesis with 42%, considering that within of the neuropsychological syndromes presented by patients with brain tumor, aphasia is found in 59%, learning difficulty in 40%, inhibitory control problems in 29%, difficulty in understanding in 27%. CONCLUSIONS: the highest prevalence of patients with brain tumor, predominates in women with 68%, with a syndromic picture: headache, nausea, vision disturbance, seizures, mainly; affected neuropsychological syndromes such as attention, aphasia, memory mainly.
